What the company builds
Miha Biotech is developing a dressing made of marine algae extract and collagen. The product is more than 99% natural, hypoallergenic, and made for sensitive skin. It is applied to burns and superficial wounds, and supports recovery after an injury. It replaces dressings whose synthetic glue irritates the skin.
A burn hurts and comes with inflammation. Cooling the skin after exposure to heat limits thermal damage and blisters. The dressing applied afterwards has to hold without irritating, then come off without tearing the healing skin.
The product
The team is developing three prototypes. BioSoft-Patch is a clear biomarine hydrogel that hydrates and protects, sticks gently and comes off painlessly. AlgaCool-Patch is a cooling patch made of Canadian seaweed, which lowers skin temperature by up to 20 °C in five minutes, for burn care. A third cooling technology, based on biomaterials, reduces thermal damage. The company has mastered a green extraction process and lab-scale production of 400 units a day. The three prototypes are announced as ready for clinical trials, and a patent is in preparation.
What it changes in practice
- The pain and inflammation of a burn go down, because the patch lowers skin temperature by up to 20 °C in five minutes.
- Removing the dressing does not reopen the wound, because it sticks gently and comes off painlessly.
- Sensitive skin tolerates the dressing, because it is made of more than 99% natural materials and has no synthetic glue.
