What the company builds
AeroCardia designs a portable oxygen consumption and breathing sensor. The website intends it for runners, cyclists, triathletes and athletes who track their fitness over time. The device replaces the lab test, which requires an appointment, a mask and a metabolic cart.
Measuring oxygen consumption during exercise is done in a clinic or a lab today. You have to book an appointment and go where the equipment is. Direct measurement therefore remains rare outside these places, and athletes train between tests spaced far apart.
The product
The team is designing a soft mouthpiece held by a head strap and connected to a sensor unit. The unit communicates with an app over Bluetooth. The device reports oxygen consumption and minute ventilation breath by breath, and tracks VO2 max as a trend over time. Calibration is redone automatically every time the device is put on. Athletes stay in charge of their training: a progressive test updates their targets, and the device provides the measurement.
What it changes in practice
- Oxygen consumption measurement leaves the lab, because the sensor is worn during the session, without a cart of gas analyzers.
- Calibration no longer needs a step beforehand, because it automatically accounts for the air's parameters each time the device is put on.
- Tracking becomes continuous rather than occasional, because each session produces its own measurement instead of waiting for the next appointment.
