What the company builds
HOCI designs a light-up bike helmet for city cyclists. Light strips give it 360-degree visibility, turn signals are triggered by remote control, and a Bluetooth link handles communication. The product is in the prototyping phase.
A cyclist signals a turn by holding out an arm, which means letting go of the handlebars. The rest of the time, their visibility depends on the time of day, the street lighting and what they wear on their back.
The product
The team builds the lighting, the signals and the Bluetooth link into the helmet itself, rather than into an accessory to attach to the bike. The turn signals respond to a remote control, which leaves both hands on the handlebars. The cyclist stays in control of what they signal and when.
What it changes in practice
- The cyclist is visible all the way around, because the light strips cover 360 degrees.
- A turn can be signalled without letting go of the handlebars, because the turn signals are triggered by remote control.
- The signals follow the cyclist from one bike to another, because they are in the helmet.
